Favored by the locals, Japanese Covered Bridge stands as one of the most famous city landmarks. The iconic bridge was built in the end of the 16th century to connect the Japanese and Chinese areas of the town. A legend has it that the bridge sits on the back of an ancient monstrous earthquake-causing dragon. A small, simple temple inside the bridge is dedicated to a weather god, who is believed to have the power to stop earthquakes. The wooden pagoda roof and the original ornamentation are well-preserved and the arched shape of the road was restored in 1986. Notice the pairs of guardian statues on each entrance, representing dogs and monkeys. There are two explanations for this--one is that these are the years in the Chinese calendar when the bridge was begun and finished and the other one is that these are the Zodiac signs of many Chinese emperors. • The oldest bridge in Hoi An, built by the Japanese. A short bridge across a canal, there is a small temple in the middle of the bridge. The bridge gives you access to the old city area.

  • Beautiful tiny temple on the bridge. Glad to visit this place while it's not super crowded. Not sure what it looks like during the day but it's pretty at night, and only a block away from the Thu Bon River where there are lots of lantern boats and restaurants. It's a good ending to the short walk from the fabric district and Hoi An market.
  • 6 am walk provides a clear view and access to the Old Town area without hassles. Day is reasonable, evenings and weekends busy but not hectic as in previous years. Love this area, and having a polite and friendly approach with the local people will reward you with many lovely memories
