Kasteel de Haar, Haarzuilens

Roam the formal gardens of Kasteel de Haar, and then head inside to admire the richly decorated and wood interior. Located just outside Utrecht, this medieval fortress is complete with ramparts, gates, drawbridges, and large gardens. It was fully restored and rebuilt in 1892 after a large donation from the Rothschild family, but previous structures on the land date back to 1391. The inhabitants, the Van Zuylen van Nyevelt family, passed ownership over to the foundation, but still reserve the right to spend one month at the castle per year. Guided tours are available to see the kitchens, greeting rooms, and dining rooms, but are usually only conducted in Dutch.
