Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre
Get a sense of warn-torn 1940s Europe at Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, a memorial complex teaching about life in the ghettos and the horror of the Holocaust. A collection of photographs, films, artifacts, and multimedia presentations in recreated environs narrate the persecution of Jews, Romanis, Slavs, homosexuals, and German clergymen by the Third Reich--but also of a segregated society in general. Archive material and eyewitness accounts attest to the follies of the pseudoscience of race, and illustrate the roots of anti-Semitism and Apartheid. Watch the 20-minute documentary about Holocaust survivors who made their home in Cape Town. In spite of the subject matter, the museum strives to be child-friendly. The rollercoaster of emotions one experiences along your journey through the museum is down to the professionalism in the display, layout and information. This is how a museum should be.

Sobering experience. Those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it! A relatively small display compared to other countries, but impressive nonetheless.

Always worth spending time is this important and contemplative space, trying to come to terms with a haunting reality. An interesting conversation about archival preservation based on discussing Three Minutes a documentary to be shown at the Encounters International South African Documentary Film Festival. mapmyway.co.za will keep you posted.
