Create an itinerary including Postojna Cave
Ride on a double-track railway through the underground tunnels of Postojna Cave and see colorful rock formations, as well as the 100 species that make the caves their home. One of the largest caves in the extensive karst plateau features 21 km (13 mi) of passages, galleries, and chambers illuminated by electric lighting. A historical train takes you to large halls adorned with chandelier-like stalactites and limestone "sculptures," such as "the brilliant," a shiny white limestone formation. Meet the olm, a salamander popularly called the dragon's offspring or the human fish. Archduke Ferdinand I was the first to officially visit the cave in 1819, but several writings on the cave walls date all the way back to the 13th century. Note that audioguides are available in a range of languages. You can plan Postojna trip in no time by asking Inspirock to help create your itinerary.

  • This was an amazing place to visit with some stunning sights. Unfortunately it was spoilt by guides rushing along and not giving people time to take everything in. I personally heard no more than...

  • Spectacular trip around one of the largest cave systems in Europe. A 15 minute train journey followed by a well designed three mile walk around the caves with frequent stops to appreciate the settings as well as the stalagmites and stalagmites. There is commentary over a loudspeaker system so you always feel well informed. At the end of the trip you exit via the large underground hall to the train. Temperatures in the cave are not particularly low but it can feel quite chilly on the train.
  • Well worth a visit! The whole area felt clean and modern with lots of choice to eat and drink during your visit. The train journey into the cafe was smooth and lasted between 5-10 minutes. After this you walk through the cafe with a large group of approx 50 people stopping ever 10 minutes for a talk from the guide. The caves are vast and feel like they go on for eternity, you could easily loose you bearings inside but the smooth pathways help guide you along. Be aware of some steep walks up and down which may not be suitable for some visitors.
