Transfagarasan Highway, Curtea de Arges

With its sheer drops, Transfagarasan Highway winds through the mountains, in sections clinging to the cliffs while passing through a natural gorge. Urban legend has it that Nicolae Ceausescu ordered the building of the 150 km (93 mi) road as a strategic route in case of Soviet invasion. The road will take you past the two castles associated with Vlad the Impaler (who inspired the legend of Dracula); you'll also see several lakes and a waterfall as you make your way to the second-largest dam in the country. The road's highest point is the tunnel, which connects the northern and southern sides of the lake at 2,042 m (6,700 ft).
