Vila Algarve, Maputo

Once an example of residential colonial architecture, Vila Algarve served as the seat of the secret police during the Portuguese colonial period. When the villa was constructed in 1934, it featured lavish tile work. The remains of exterior decoration can still be seen, though the building has continuously fallen into disrepair since the country gained independence. Different plans have been made for the future of the villa--a lawyer's association wants to turn it into their headquarters, while the government wants to turn it into a museum--but nothing has been done yet.
