Originally built in the 12th century, the present-day structure of Gede Ruins dates from the 15th and 16th century. This site features large stone houses in addition to a mosque and palace; researchers believe that the town--which remained undiscovered until the 1940s--once supported 2,500 people. The walled city represents a medieval Swahili settlement that likely covered and also features a pillar tomb, which signified a man of importance was buried there.     A must see when in Watamu. Lots to see. The moneys will jump on you so just be prepared. They are friendly but got my shirt dirty. Our guide was amazing and taught us lots about the ruins. 1100 AD...

    Very interesting and we also did the butterfly and snake farm whilst there. Sadly it was not the right season for the butterflies but was still interesting. Need to go in rainy season for the best...

    We had a great tour and our guide was very knowledgeable on matters history and the great city. The insights on culture, business and relations back are mesmerising. Coupled with the other areas I.e butterfly farm and snake park... Would definitely recommend

    This is a historic site, you get a guide at the gate that takes you around and explains everything. There are monkeys that you can take pictures of if you give them snacks, feel free to bring your own snacks like nuts or bananas or give the guide money to buy them outside. I find Gedi ruins to be one of those beautiful places that I can and have always gone back to. It is very photogenic and a great representation of nature when well taken care of.
