Nearly 2,000 years old, Pantheon is the only building from the Greco-Roman world that has remained substantially intact and in continuous use throughout its long history. A marvel of ancient architecture, it still boasts the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. Originally designed to be a temple to all the gods of the ancient Rome, the site has been used as a Roman Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary, since the seventh century. The building features large, granite Corinthian columns. Don't skip this site if it's raining; seeing and hearing the rain pouring into this ancient building through the hole in the ceiling is a special experience. Overwhelming that this building was built in 142 AD & still stands today. Not only stands, but is in daily use, as a church. No longer does it serve ALL the God's, the Pantheon of God's, but Jesus Christ. I'd like to think, him a carpenter & aware how things were built, he'd be impressed by the engineering it took to build this. The floor is original. The ceiling, with it's opening admitting the light (& rain - with careful drains - built in in 142 AD), the beautiful walls are marvel. Well worth the time to see. Be sure to get the audio guide so you go, from station to station, to see and understand what you are seeing. You do not need to guided by an expensive human guide, just rent the audio guide an DIY. We were told an hour and a half (tops), but spent nearly three, but we asked to be admitted to the Chapel area, to pray. [You must ask one of the uniformed guards to let you beyond the ropes.] So maybe two & a half hours to see it? Very worthwhile two and a half hours in Roma. You DO need tickets, which you can order online, from the Pantheon itself. They give you a day & time for admittance.
Always remarkable place to visit! The light comes always differently so kind of unique every time. PLEASE note that Pantheon is basilica, aka church: there are some good manners to follow, when there is crowded make sure your shoulders are covered and not wearing too short shorts/skirt, the queue stops every time when the guards have to say about visitors clothing.
