Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina
Lying on the bank of Pisa's Arno River, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Spina is one of Tuscany's finest Gothic churches. Although it was originally built in 1230, the church was dismantled and rebuilt on a higher level in 1871 because of water infiltration from the river. The church's name comes from a legend that a thorn belonging to the crown worn by Christ on the cross came here in 1933. The church's facade, with two gates, linteled arches, and several statues and sculptures, is much more ornate than the simple interior. Very beautiful little church. It’s very old but very well maintained. Unfortunately when I visited I couldn’t go inside. But even from outside is very beautiful.
