Some say the beautiful walled cemetery of Camposanto was built around a shipload of holy soil brought from Golgotha in the 12th century. The cemetery’s main feature is a vast rectangular Gothic cloister lined by arches. While most of the cemetery’s frescoes were destroyed in World War II, view the two remaining, as well as detailed sketches of the original works of art. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Pisa holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Camposanto and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

This old cemetery is the least impressive in the famous square. Many tourists skip it, as entrance is charged separately.

Amazing attraction, lots of history and stories about the paintings on the wall. Definitely recommend visiting and spending enough time there. You can buy tickets on the day or in advance. The Camposanto has nice garden in the centre. There seems to be a room where they held regular services and prayers.

Probably the most interesting building in the Campo dei Miracoli with none of the crowds that surround the tower. Although many of the frescoes are currently being restored, you can still visit the whole monument. Where the frescoes still cover the walls, it’s easy to imagine the impact they must have once had on visitors, especially the depictions of judgment day and hell!
