Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Basilicata / Province of Matera / Matera / Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario
Take a look inside a Sassi cave dwelling at Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario. Use a guided audio tour to learn about what life was like inside a peasant dwelling. The home is complete with furniture and tools of the era, as well as a room for livestock. Used until 1959, when families living in the caves were transferred by government order to modern homes, the cave house includes four stories with steep narrow stairs, which were lived in by a family of 11 and their livestock. A black-and-white film offers a closer examination of what life was like here during the 1950s. This place takes you back up to a couple hundreds years ago. It is better than virtual reality. You step in into the real thing - a strange and amazing place where people used to live in a way that is very much different from the contemporary norm.
Although the house is interesting and represents the living conditions of the people in the last century, it is a ripoff. We were admitted in, given an English guide. There was audio in Italian. Halfway through they asked us to leave since there was another group coming in. At no point prior to selling us tickets did they mention groups. We managed to see half of the dwelling. When we asked if we could check out the adjacent rooms they rudely refused because they are just "waiting areas". We were never told about it so that we could spend time before the main thing. They were obviously part of the experience since they had pictures and descriptions on the walls. 3€ it's not much but it's too much for this level of service. Would not recommend.
