This was a family's home until the 1950s. Amazing! But imagine it in 1850, 1650, 1450. Not that much different. Do not visit the Sassi neighborhood without visiting at least one house museum.

There are now several of these restored caves open in Matera - hard to imagine that the others would be better than this, plus it has the bonus of a rock crypt. We paid 3 euros per person for both...

Had a fantastic time learning of the history of Matera and olive oil production in the area. Highly recommend. The tours are very personalized and the owner is extremely welcoming. He let us in off schedule and was very engaging and kind. The museum is a labor of love of the owner.

A significant part of Matera's History not even that far away back to past years. Changes of lifestyle for resident people, definitely came in 1952... That means : tap water, electricity and sanitary facilities in new apartments, not always as large as families would've needed. But... that was the new suggestion for a BETTER FUTURE.
