  • XIII - XVIII (entire building well) Parish church of Maratea historic center since 1434, the year in which it emancipated itself from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of San Biagio al Castello and, for this reason, it was called the "Mother Church". It is built on an original core dating back to the 13th-14th century, which has undergone numerous modifications and extensions over time, giving it its current appearance. The most important was obtained by unifying a tower, transformed into a presbytery, and the adjacent chapel of St. Mary into a single building, thus becoming the only nave that still characterizes the building. The marble plaque, placed near the baptismal font, seems to attribute these works to Mercury Greco at the beginning of the 1500s. In the 1700s the Church underwent other transformations: a new wall was superimposed on the original internal facade, built according to the canons of the Baroque style, which still characterize it. Description The original nucleus was born in the XII-XIV century, taking up the title of the church of Santa Maria al Castello. In 1434 it separated from the parish of the Basilica of San Biagio, and since then it has been the main parish of Maratea. In 1505 the enlargement works were carried out which brought the church, gradually, to its present size. The large bell tower, a rectangular base with an octagonal elevation, of clear Romanesque style, probably also dates back to this period. During the 18th century a tower was incorporated into the church choir, which today forms the presbytery. The church suffered considerable damage in the 1857 earthquake.
