Both a protected reserve and a temple complex, Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary shelters several hundred long-tailed Balinese macaques. The monkeys get their nourishment from the forest staff, which feeds them sweet potatoes several times a day. Though you can't give the monkeys peanuts, cookies, or other snacks, you can purchase bananas if you want to feed the little ones yourself--just be prepared for a lot of attention from these cheeky creatures, and stow away valuables and shiny objects. This jungle sanctuary contains three temples, allegedly constructed in the 14th century. Keep in mind you can enter sacred sections of the temples only if you wear traditional praying clothes. Stop by the forest office near the main entrance, which accepts donations and provides detailed information about the sanctuary's history and significance. Had the best day here! I was very nervous about the monkeys but as long as you follow the guidelines and don’t scare them, you will be fine. The guides who work in the park really made the experience so incredible. The BEST part is these animals are not caged, they are free to come and go as they please. Very awesome way to have an up close experience with animals without exploiting them for tourist purposes.
Amazing experience. I have been there three times already and I never get tired of it. If you consider going, please respect the guidelines. Avoid bringing food, water bottles or shiny, colorful objects. The monkeys are not pets, the will attack you and fight you for it. Avoid looking them in the eyes for too long as it is a sign of aggression to them. Don't let your children chase after the monkeys while yelling, you and your children will have a bad time. In short be respectful, these are still wild animals. The monkeys are well fed and generally very calm otherwise. Enjoy the walk, talk to the friendly park guardsmen, take lots of pictures.
