At Gandhi Memorial Museum, explore one of the five museums in India dedicated to Gandhi, located in the impressive Tamukkam Palace. The memorial museum was established in 1959, after an appeal by the citizens of India, who wanted to see memorials built in Gandhi’s honor. Wander through the historic palace, and discover the blood-stained clothes worn by Gandhi when he was assassinated in 1948. You’ll also find many letters of interest on display, as well as collections relating to India's fight for freedom, Gandhi's life story, and the nation's political history. A visit to Gandhi Memorial Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Madurai day trip tool to plot your vacation.

  • Very well managed museum and a must visit place in Madurai. This is probably the best museum we have visited both in India and abroad. There are many photographs and the explanations that are well laid out. Also, contains many original artifact's of Mahatma Gandhi. Don't forget to visit the small bookstore and the government museum in the same premises. Entry to Gandhi museum is free but there is a small charge for the Government museum.
  • Wow, what a lovely campus. Very well maintained building. That stone block built hall is so great! Very ideal for small exhibitions.
