Volcán de Fuego (Spanish pronunciation: [bolˈkan de ˈfweɣo]; Spanish for "Volcano of Fire", often shortened to Fuego) or Chi Q'aq' (Kaqchikel for "where the fire is") is an active stratovolcano in Guatemala, on the borders of Chimaltenango, Escuintla and Sacatepéquez departments. It sits about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Antigua, one of Guatemala's most famous cities and a tourist destination. It has erupted frequently since the Spanish conquest, most recently in June and November 2018, 23 September 2021, and 11 December 2022.Work out when and for how long to visit Volcan de Fuego and other Guatemala City attractions using our handy Guatemala City trip maker website.
Fuego is famous for being almost constantly active at a low level. Small gas and ash eruptions occur every 15 to 20 minutes, but larger eruptions are rare. Andesite and basalt lava types dominate, and recent eruptions have tended to be more mafic than older ones.
The volcano is joined with Acatenango and collectively the complex is known as La Horqueta.

if you have never seen a volcano erupting, this is it. it last erupted 2018 killing 3000 inhabitants. and making the nearby areas uninhabitable.

Our visit to Guatemala was very short, but we could not leave the country without visiting Antigua. It is a small city, and worth of a visit!

Definitely the most amazing hike there is in Guatemala. It starts out very steep and almost doesn’t end going steep. The higher you get, the better the views! When you reach the top you have the option to go even closer to Fuego (at own risk of course). The eruptions and sounds are amazing to see, dark foggy clouds and lava, amazing! Make sure to take some pills with you for the height sickness, elevation is at 3500.

Volcan de Fuego is my most favourite volcano. Been planning this hike for nearly two years and finally made it happen. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime experience and anyone planning to do this- you have to do it! It’s not an easy challenge but not impossible either. I promise you, one you get to the top at 13000ft, you’re gonna be so proud of yourself. Go on, do it!
