National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology
Immerse yourself in the cultural and historical heritage of Guatemala at National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. With approximately 3,000 sq m (32,291.7 sq ft) of exhibition space hosting 20,000 archaeological artifacts and 5,000 ethnological pieces, you can explore a wealth of significant Mesomerican history. The museum has been at its present location since 1946, although its existence was established long before then by a governmental decree in 1898. Browse an extensive collection of pre- and post-classical artifacts, Maya art, textiles and tools, and displays presenting current and past indigenous Guatemalan culture. The museum also includes a fascinating collection of books in its public library, some of which you can buy in the souvenir shop. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and many more Guatemala City attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Guatemala City online trip maker.

The museum is organized into pre classic, classic and post classic exhibits of the Mayan civilizations. It is a good way to get background before going to the actual ruins.

I really enjoyed my time in this quiet museum. Many great artifacts from Guatemalan history. He museum has some fantastic exhibits and some awful exhibits, with no Spanish, never mind English information. Worth a visit after seeing the large pyramids and other Maya sites.
