Create an itinerary including Volcán Pacaya
One of the country's most active volcanoes, Volcán Pacaya erupts regularly but usually in a mildly explosive fashion. As a visitor, you'll have the opportunity to take guided tours around this natural wonder, which features cooled lava chambers and hot spots (over which you can roast marshmallows). Consider taking a horseback tour of the volcano for a quick and less strenuous excursion compared to the 1.5-hour uphill hike. PutVolcán Pacaya into our Antigua day trip planning site and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The hike up the Pacaya Volcano is pretty easy if you are fit. At the top, you can roast marshmellows inside volcanic vents.

  • We booked this trip thru TripAdvisor and the agency comes and picks you up from Hotel. The drive to Pacaya was a bit rough. Not the best roads and the driver was a bit aggressive. This seems to be...

  • A relatively easier option re hiking to get close to hot water vapor coming out of the ground. Definitely No View of the lava. The approx 60 min hike is steep and mostly on soft powder lava dust, hence it is a harder walk. Of course you are climbing in altitude, which will also feel harder. Along the way you have nice views of mountains and the other two volcanoes. As the sun sets, you'll have wonderful colors all around. At the stop up top, there are a couple of guys who will bake you a pizza using thermal energy from the ground - cheesy, but cool. (We had a very poor experience using Old Town Outfitters Adventure Guatemala for Pacaya hike. Please consider not using them.)
  • Relatively easy 60 min hike up if you’re fit. Sunset views are amazing and the marshmallow roasting is a nice touch. Careful on the volcanic gravel, easy to lose your footing.
