Catedral Metropolitana
The final resting place of assassinated archbishop Oscar Romero, Catedral Metropolitana has a colorful history hiding behind its towering white facade. The principal church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Salvador, the cathedral was completed and inaugurated after years of construction in 1999, built on the previous site of the Temple of Santo Domingo. Read up on your history before visiting, as the white simplistic architecture only hints at the building's eventful past. In 1980, a shooting and subsequent stampede at the cathedral during archbishop Romero's funeral shocked the nation. More recent controversy involved the removal of the famous and much loved mural that once adorned its entrance, by the then Archbishop of San Salvador. Architecturally the structure is not astounding. There was a mural by a noted artist that was removed by the current archbishop so the façade is even less notable. Still, the main church is located...

Located in the main downtown area, this is a lovely little cathedral. Probably need all but 30 minutes here, max.

Nice settings and a place to stop and pay your respects. As magnificent as it is... I prefer other churches around town and the country. Santa Ana cathedral has the vibe that you expect traveling around the world.

Great historic church. There's no security though. We were in the basement museum and a crazy homeless got in and started screaming.
