Visit Irazu Volcano National Park and drive to the top of Costa Rica’s tallest active volcano. The summit allows views of the volcano’s main crater, with views of the surrounding mountainous landscape. Visit the secondary crater, Diego de la Haya, to view its mineral-rich lake. The areas around the crater are barren, giving visitors the feeling of being in an alien landscape. With more than 2,023 hectares (5,000 acres) in the national park, it is home to montane forests and animal life including armadillos, owls, foxes, and a variety of birds. Using our custom trip planner, Cartago attractions like Irazu Volcano National Park can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Easy trip once you find it - can be hard to find and far out of the way. Best to have an SUV as the roads are kind of rough at best.

It is a nice place to walk, see plants and animals very similar to the Andean Paramos. The weather is nice but could be a little chilly. You have to be lucky to see the lake , usually is cloudy...

I was here with "Willy Tours", oct 3 2022. -We were delayed getting to the top because of car problems, 1 hour delay. The blue sky turned to clouds by the time we got up there. -Couldnt see anything from the top observation deck, just clouds, there is a structure up there to get a good view, but clouds. -We also went to the lower observation area and path, there is a building and washrooms and parking lot at the entrance to this. then a path leading between the 2 old craters, to the main crater. At this time of year there was no water in the crater, no blue water lake. It was easier to see things here, less clouds or the clouds moved through in groups, so it would clear perfectly for a min or 2. -Nothing too spectacular with the clouds, but still a good experince. Its also the tallest volcano in costa rica at 3500meters. -The drive up the volcano is scenic, with spots to stop and take pictures of the area, citys. you can see the san jose stadium from the road. Farms along the way and driving though clouds. *Like this review below if the info helps*

Go in the morning for better opportunity to see the current crater. The previous one that is now a Laguna recently reopened a couple weeks ago after being closed since 2017 eruption. You can now stay longer than 20 mins and walk over to it as well as continue on the nature path back to parking area.
