Learn about some of nature's most misunderstood creatures at The Bat Jungle. The animal research and observation facility seeks to dispel some of the common misconceptions regarding the winged beasts by teaching about the diversity of bat species, their habitats, their behavior, and the importance they have in many cultures. From behind a glass screen, watch 40 live bats of seven different species flying around a large enclosure, designed to look just like a cloud forest at nighttime. Listen to the ultrasonic echolocation calls and social calls of the bats as they fly around, with the usually undetectable sounds translated through a special receiver. We were looking for a low key activity for the day and found the Bat Jungle far exceeded expectations. Our knowledgeable guide gave us a fascinating lecture about bats, which was possibly the best...

My wife and I visited the Bat Jungle while traveling to Costa Rica last month. Vino was a great tour guide and really taught us a lot about bats. We loved that we could also see the bats flying around in the enclosure. Seeing them up close was amazing. There is also a really nice restaurant upstairs in the same building as the bat house. It has really great food and service and worth visiting for some delicious food and homemade chocolate after the tour.

This exhibit must be significantly better if you go with the tour. Self guided, we were charged $10 per person and finished in about five minutes. We read all of the wonderful reviews about this place when using a guide. Perhaps we missed it, but we couldn't find any information when the tours took place. We arrived at 12:45 and would need to wait until 3pm for a tour. Sadly, we didn't have that sort of time to sit around. Call ahead and confirm when a tour is taking place because the one-room enclosure didn't do this highly rated attraction any justice.
