Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary
A non-profit organization, Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and releases local animals into the natural habitat. Tours lasting between 1 and 1.5 hours provide information about the sanctuary's aims, objectives, and rescue efforts. Visitors have a chance to meet many of the sanctuary's residents, including sloths, spider monkeys, capuchins, anteaters, raccoons, parrots, toucans, porcupines, and kinkajous. You'll learn about their history, biology, and conservation needs from fully trained tour guides. Although you'll be able to take photos there, keep in mind that visitors cannot touch animals in accordance to Costa Rica's laws. Donations go directly and completely to running the sanctuary. It is recommended that visitors have a 4x4 vehicle to get up the hill. VISITORS MUST MAKE A RESERVATION USING THE ONLINE BOOKING SYSTEM, PLEASE SEE WEBSITE. Kids enjoyed seeing the animals and learning about them. A little pricey, but it goes to a good cause.

Very clean and spacious location for animals to be rehabilitated then released (if possible). The staff is very friendly and allows travelers to volunteer, must follow procedures before entering areas with animals. The people who work there have a massive amount of passion for what they do, it's really beautiful to witness. After returning from my trip, other friends asked if I stopped here, both were inspired by their time at the wildlife Sanctuary

A truly special experience for us and our kids. We all learned a lot and you get pretty close to some of the animals you may have seen from afar in the area. I really like how one of the interns asked pointed questions at the end about how to make the tour even better. They really put a lot of effort and care into the mission. Pro tip - bring swim trunks, walk back into the hotel after the tour, order a meal or a drink, and jump in the pool with the sweeping coastal views for he rest of the afternoon.
