Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano)
Climb Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano), an inactive volcano covered in lush greenery. Believed to have erupted for the first time 38,000 years ago, the volcano last saw activity approximately 3,500 years ago--making it an entirely different proposition to its noisy neighbor, Arenal. Take one of the two routes to reach the top and see the lagoon of green water in its crater. Most regard the hikes as relatively tough for beginners, and the paths can become particularly muddy and dangerous when it rains. By using our La Fortuna de San Carlos trip app, you can arrange your visit to Cerro Chato (Chato Volcano) and other attractions in La Fortuna de San Carlos.

Really nice hike, it was the highlight of Arenal for us. The hike is hard but a moderately fit person could do it as long as you keep in mind that you will end up covered in mud and will use your hands a lot (hugging trees and branches was my specialty). Do wear good shoes. It took me and my sister (both moderately fit and with hiking experience) 3h and 15 min going back and forth. If you like hikes and are up for great views I’ll definitely recommend it. The hotel charges you 12usd per person to do the first half of the track.

Tough hike up to the lagoon following the trail on Google maps. If you ignore the 'do not enter' sign its a climb to the top and a steep descent into the crater. Muddy, slippery, but worth the effort to get to the lagoon
