Travel in style on Cockle Train, operating year-round along the route of Australia’s first railway, which dates back to 1887. Named after edible saltwater clams (locally called "cockles"), which the early settlers of the area collected from the sandy beaches along the Murray River, the train runs with a steam locomotive during school holidays, and uses historic diesel locomotives and railcars on all other days. This romantic train trip takes travelers back in time and puffs its way along the scenic southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Check operating dates and save time by purchasing your tickets online at least two days before your intended trip. The concept is great and the ride from Victor Harbor to Middleton has some great(beach) scenery. After that it goes inland and the scenery is of farms with old sheds, abandoned machinery and houses..... more

Wow! This was amazing! The volunteers were so friendly and knowledgeable about the trains and the history. My kids had a thousand questions and they patiently answered them all. It was excellent to be able to take a dog on board too, otherwise we would have missed out on this fantastic trip. Oh and the scenery is stunning!!!!

What an experience. The Cockle Train is a part of the excellent Steam Ranger Railway. This is a world class heritage railway stretching over 80 kilometres or 50 miles. The Cockle Train operates through three major heritage stations that reflect a range of architectural styles. Each of these stations and another stopping place are closely located to major towns that have many restaurants, hotels, specialty shops, galleries, takeaway options and heritage sites that provide plenty of options for travellers. The Cockle Train is normally a diesel rail car service and this is more than adequate for the service. The scenery is rather special and includes rural settings and a spectacular run along the coastline. The operations team are friendly and helpful and very keen to share their passion for railways. I think the Cockle Train and Steam Ranger are more than equal to many of the best heritage railways in the world. Make sure you visit and take a trip on the Cockle Train and or Steam Ranger service.
