Take a self-guided tour around the 13th-century remains of Berat Castle. Located on the banks of the Osum River, the fortress overlooks the town of Berat. The Romans burned the original fort, which has been rebuilt many times since. The haunting ruins cover a large area and, in the castle's glory days, were able to hold a large number of the city's residents. Many of these buildings were Christian churches from the 13th century, with one mosque whose minaret base still stands. You may be carrying the fortress in your pocket: the attraction appears on the back of Albanian 10 lekë coins put in circulation in 1996 and 2000. • Berti served as our tour guide and he was fantastic. We enjoyed seeing how families are still living in the castle area. So many years of history at the crossroads of different civilizations.

  • When you are in Berat, you should visit the castle as it is the only castle still inhabited in Albania. It has very old churches and mosques, interesting ruins and great views of the city from above.....  more

  • Easily accessible by car, parking right nearby, astonishing view, really admired the pavements and the walls as well the local houses inside. Small and coquettes restaurants inside with authentic cuisine. Dogs allowed, pet friendly!
  • Visited September 2022. Amazing castle ruins and free to explore. Wonderful views from the viewpoint. We didn't stop for a drink but there are lots of cafes at the top.
