McCaig's Tower, Oban

#2 of 256 in Things to do in Argyll and Bute
Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
Designed and commissioned by the same man, John Stuart McCaig, McCaig's Tower is a monument to the McCaig family that was built by local stonemasons. The original plans included a museum, gallery, and a series of sculptures of the McCaig family. However, McCaig passed away with only the outer walls completed. These walls still overlook the water and islands with landscaped gardens in the center. The walls sit like a crown above the city, and you'll find photo-worthy views of them from the town center. • A must visit while in Oban It has a small car park at the top of the hill next to the tower. However I would highly recommend you take a walking route from the main street below up the hill. Word of warning for some: It is a steep walk in places, but it's not a long route and there are some great little side streets and gardens to admire on the way up & down. Once you make it there are some wonderful views over the whole of Oban, take a packed lunch with you and admire the scenery for a while before heading back down.
  • Gorgeous place and great views over Oban! Definitely worth the walk up if you're fit, or there is a car park at the top if you prefer to drive. Would recommend reading the section in the war and peace museum about how and why it was built as it makes it even more special. Loved it!
