#1 of 18 in Things to do in Monastir
Visit the monumental burial place of the father of Tunisian independence at Bourghiba Mausoleum. The mausoleum's construction began back in 1963, only to reach completion after president Habib Bourguiba's death in 2000. A long walkway leads up to the traditional building, consisting of three domes flanked by tall minarets. Inside the mausoleum, stop into the small museum that brings together some of the leader's personal belongings, including his desk, pens, glasses, and collection of private photographs. • Ask any Tunisian and they will tell you that Habib Bourguiba is their nation's saviour, rescuing them from French rule in the 1950s (and giving women the right to vote). A scaled down model of the...  more »

  • Whilst visiting Tunisia, I felt compelled to visit the resting and celebration place of Habib Bourguiba. All of the Tunisians I met hold him in such high regard as well as Tunisians standing as the ‘most stable’, democratic country in the region. Very beautiful place and stunning sarcophagus
  • A beautiful mauseoleum with many private things that belonged to Habib Bourguiba. The only reason I gave it a four is because the security guard tried to rip us off. As you may know the entrance to mausoleum is FREE. We entered the mausoleum at 17 o`clock, and it closes at 17:30. The security guard let us in and after a few minutes he called us to the other room. There he told us that we have to pay him because the visit hours are somehow over and he let us in just because he wanted to do us a favor. Since I knew that the mausoleum works until 17:30 and he is trying to rip us off I told him to go together and ask if he asked other people for money. When he saw that I was very angry he said that everything is ok and I do not have to pay. Watch out for them.
