Founded in 1535 by Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro, Lima represents an interesting blend of modern attractions and preserved colonial architecture, much of it clustered in the World Heritage-listed city center.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Cathedral of Lima and Marcahuasi. Venture out of the city with trips to Huarochiri (El Canon de Austisha & Markahuasi), Parque Zonal Chavin de Huantar (in Quilmana) and Catarata de Antankallo (in Matucana). Next up on the itinerary: walk around Parque Kennedy - Parque Central de Miraflores, delve into the distant past at Huaca Pucllana, take in the views from Bridge of Sighs, and take a stroll through Miraflores.

The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Torre del Reloj and Plaza de la Aduana. Go for a jaunt from Cartagena to Isla Baru to see Playa Blanca about 1h 5 min away. There's lots more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Wildlife Areas, don't miss a visit to Centro de Convenciones Cartagena de Indias, see the interesting displays at Caribe Jewelry Museum & Factory, and ponder the world of politics at Alcaldia Mayor.
