Step out of Rome to go to Tivoli and see Villa d'Este, which is approximately 48 minutes away. There's lots more to do: contemplate the long history of St. Peter's Basilica, wander the streets of Trastevere, delve into the distant past at Palatine Hill, and pause for some serene contemplation at Pantheon.
