Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Colosseum and St. Peter's Basilica are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola and Colle del Gianicolo. Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the long history of Palatine Hill, visit Trastevere, explore the galleries of Sistine Chapel, and explore the world behind art at Musei Capitolini.

Vancouver, Canada to Rome is an approximately 16-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of train and flight. The time zone difference when traveling from Vancouver to Rome is 9 hours. Traveling from Vancouver in October, things will get somewhat warmer in Rome: highs are around 73°F and lows about 55°F. Considered a cultural, artistic, and architectural jewel of Italy, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Piazzale Michelangelo and Basilica San Miniato al Monte. Get some historical perspective at Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Abbazia di San Galgano. Explore Florence's surroundings by going to Duomo di Siena (in Siena) and Duomo di Pisa (in Pisa). There's still lots to do: explore the world behind art at Academy Of Florence Art Gallery, get to know the fascinating history of Piazza della Signoria, take in the spiritual surroundings of The Baptistery of St. John, and see the interesting displays at Pitti Palace.

Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Piazza San Marco and Doge's Palace will appeal to history buffs. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Scrovegni Chapel and Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Take a break from Venice with a short trip to Basilica di Sant’Antonio in Padua, about 38 minutes away. There's still lots to do: explore the activities along Canal Grande, explore the world behind art at Gallerie dell'Accademia, wander the streets of Cannaregio, and make a trip to Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

Getting from Florence to Venice by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Florence in October, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Venice: temperatures range from 66°F by day to 51°F at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Sun) early enough to travel to Dubrovnik.

Along the Dalmation Coast, the city of Dubrovnik has become famous for its pedestrian-only Old Town surrounded by fortress walls, and its historical heft has earned it World Heritage Site status.
Get a sense of the local culture at Old Town and Fort Lovrijenac. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Lapad and Dubrovnik City Walls. Go for a jaunt from Dubrovnik to Cavtat to see Cavtat Old Town about 34 minutes away. The adventure continues: step off the mainland to explore Island of Lokrum, make a trip to Stradun, and enjoy breathtaking views from Upper Corner Tower Foundry Museum.

Start off your visit on the 21st (Wed): stop by Old Town. On your second day here, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Fraumünster Church, then contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Lucerne, and then take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt Pilatus.
