Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
Popular historic sites such as Iglesia de San Francisco and Iglesia El lugar de Su Presencia are in your itinerary. Kids will appreciate attractions like Jardin Botanico de Bogota Jose Celestino Mutis and Gold Museum (Museo del Oro). Get out of town with these interesting Bogota side-trips: Parque Natural Chicaque (in Chicaque) and Bioparque La Reserva (in Cota). Kick off your visit on the 20th (Mon): pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral Diocesana. Here are some ideas for day two: pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira and then explore the activities along Embalse del Neusa.

Drive from Villavicencio to Zipaquira in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or drive; or do a combination of flight and bus. Expect much colder weather when traveling from Villavicencio in August: highs in Zipaquira hover around 17°C, while lows dip to 17°C. You will have some time to spend on the 22nd (Wed) before leaving for Honda.

Honda is a town and municipality in the Tolima department of Colombia. Get in touch with nature at Termales la Cabana and Balneario la Picota. Visit Catedral de Nuestra Senora del Carmen and Catedral Nuestra Senora del Carmen for their historical value. When in Honda, make a side trip to see Basilica NS de Mantara in Libano, approximately Libano away. There's much more to do: admire the striking features of Nuestra Senora del Carmen, examine the collection at Museo del Rio Magdalena, make a trip to Puente Navarro, and pause for some serene contemplation at Catedral Nuestra Senora del Rosario.
