Naples is the capital of the Italian region Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy after Rome and Milan. Parco Acheologico di Ercolano and Castello Aragonese d'Ischia will appeal to history buffs. Appreciate the collections at Monte Cassino and Villa San Michele. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Naples: Tenuta Vannulo (in Capaccio Scalo), Capri (I Faraglioni & Giardini di Augusto) and Paestum Ruins (in Paestum). There's still lots to do: take in the pleasant sights at Lungomare Caracciolo, get to know the fascinating history of Underground Naples, get impressive views of Vesuvio National Park, and make a trip to Galleria Borbonica.

Get some cultural insight at Duomo di Pisa and Centro Storico di Siena. Your inner history buff will appreciate Centro Storico and Museo Nazionale del Bargello. Venture out of the city with trips to Historic Centre of San Gimignano (in San Gimignano), Castello di Monteriggioni (in Monteriggioni) and Pisa (Baptistery of St. John & Camposanto). You can take a train from Naples to Florence in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and flight; or drive. In December, plan for daily highs up to 15°C, and evening lows to 4°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 1st (Wed) early enough to take a train to Venice.

Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Thu): contemplate the long history of Castello Estense, pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica of St. Anthony, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Scrovegni Chapel, then make a trip to Basilica Palladiana, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at San Giorgio Maggiore. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: take in the spiritual surroundings of Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, take a stroll through Cannaregio, appreciate the extensive heritage of Centro Storico di Venezia, pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, then snap pictures at Ponte dei Sospiri, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Scuola Grande di San Rocco.

Traveling by train from Florence to Venice takes 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In January, Venice is little chillier than Florence - with highs of 9°C and lows of 0°C. On the 4th (Sat), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel back home.
