Athens of South America

Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Barrio La Candelaria and Centro Comercial Fontanar. Get a sense of the local culture at Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira and Bolivar Square. Venture out of the city with trips to Centro Comercial Cento Chia (in Chia), Laguna de Guatavita (in Tierra Negra) and Climbing Tours (in Suesca). Next up on the itinerary: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Monserrate, pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica of Our Lord of Miracles of Buga, shop like a local with Parque 93, and admire the masterpieces at Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica.
