Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands of Scotland. Start off your visit on the 7th (Wed): explore the ancient world of Ring of Brodgar, steep yourself in history at Skara Brae, and then steep yourself in history at Standing Stones of Stenness. On your second day here, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Saint Magnus Cathedral, steep yourself in history at Bishop & Earls Palace, then take in the architecture and atmosphere at Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, then learn about winemaking at Orkney Wine Company, and finally delve into the distant past at Maeshowe Chambered Cairn.

Edinburgh to Kirkwall is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of car and ferry; or do a combination of train and ferry. In October, daily temperatures in Kirkwall can reach 14°C, while at night they dip to 8°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 8th (Thu) to allow enough time to travel to Inverness.

Inverness, often described as the Gateway to the Highlands, is a thriving commercial and industrial center.

Kick off your visit on the 14th (Wed): admire the verdant scenery at Glen Coe, look for all kinds of wild species at Highland Titles Nature Reserve, then contemplate the long history of Glenfinnan Viaduct, and finally contemplate the long history of Glenfinnan Monument.
