Ancud, Isla Chiloe

A city of 40,000 people, Ancud was the capital of Chiloe Archipelago until it was superseded by the city of Castro in 1982.
Start off your visit on the 31st (Mon): see the interesting displays at Museo Bomberil Cuerpo de Bomberos de Ancud, see the interesting displays at Museo Regional de Ancud, then steep yourself in history at Fuerte Ahui, and finally visit a coastal fixture at Faro Corona en Chiloe. Here are some ideas for day two: get engrossed in the history at Museo de Las Iglesias de Chiloe, then head outdoors with Pinguineras, and then look for all kinds of wild species at Chiloe Island Penguin Colony.

You can take a bus from Puerto Varas to Ancud in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and ferry. In January in Ancud, expect temperatures between 22°C during the day and 10°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Tue) so you can drive to Castro.
