Situated on a hill above the Rhine River, the medieval Basel Minster remains one of the city's major landmarks, its duo of slim towers a dominant feature in the Old Town's skyline. Erected gradually between 1019 and 1500, the building combines the finest elements of the Romanesque and Gothic styles, its colored roof tiles visible from distant corners of the city. Inside you can see a 19th-century lectern carved out of sandstone and a crypt containing the tombs of Basel's early bishops. For a bird's-eye view of the city, the river, and the Black Forest in the distance, climb the church's southern tower.     For my the No.1 sight in Basel. The famous Basler Münster. Sitting on the hill in the old town, overlooking the whole city. Also nice to spot it from the "Mittlere Brücke" for some good pics. It's...  more »

    Together with the Mittlere Brücke, the Basler Münster (Cathedral) is probably the most famous landmark in Basel. With its red sandstone walls, colourful roof tiles and twin towers, no other building.....  more »

    Not a lot to see as only the main area is open, but it's open to the public and is really a good example of a church that's 500 years old. Check out the stained glass windows and find the oldest burial (1318 was the oldest we found). Different from cathedrals in England with people buried under your feet and lots of engraved stones. The front facade is very interesting with the slaying of a small dragon.

    This is a nice cathedral. It's definitely more impressive from the outside. Highlights include the stain glass windows and the choir loft, which you can walk through. I didn't climb the towers, but you can, in groups of two or more. The cost for this is 5 francs. It doesn't cost anything to go inside. the cathedral itself.
