Gain an insight into Kingstown's history with a visit to Fort Charlotte. Unusually, this standard Napoleonic-era fort features gun turrets pointing inward to the island itself--indeed, the British army wasn't concerned with a European naval invasion, but rather the Black Caribs. The oppressed descendents of the island's indigenous cultures and shipwrecked slave escapees had caused havoc on the island when allied with French invading forces late in the 18th century. Ironically, the fort itself was built using slave labor in 1806. Take a guided tour to illuminate your visit with stories of this troubled period. Bring a camera to capture the views of Kingstown's port and waterfront from the hilltop citadel. • Historic facility with great views. Good for a quick visit but not for more than one hour, for most people. The tour guides we had were very knowledgeable and gave a good sense of its former uses. Well worth a visit.
  • A visit to Fort Charlotte, Saint Vincent is decidedly an unforgettable escapade into the history of this beautiful, small island state. Fort Charlotte, Saint Vincent is accessible by a winding road which becomes very steep as you ascend to the top of the hill. Try walking up here if you're not fit and you'll become quickly winded. The amazing walls surrounding the Fort are built on very steep cliffs which dangerously drop into the sea. I often wonder how the British could have had such advanced construction knowledge, leaving behind such a legacy. These walls are steady and secure. The Fort itself is a throwback to days gone by, with a historic prison overlooking the sea plus British army cannons decorating its walls . There are paintings of Saint Vincent's history in one of the large rooms, depicting life of yesteryear. The Fort also has a lighthouse which is still manned, although modern day ships do not appear to be in demand of the services. The most amazing feature is the breathtaking panoramic view of Kingstown and the harbor and surrounding bays. You just have to visit to see and experience the unforgettable Fort Charlotte, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
