Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja), Ljubljana

4.6
Visit one of the city's landmarks and a prime example of mature Baroque in Slovenia at Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja). Modeled after Rome's most famous Jesuit church Il Gesu, the building replaced an earlier Gothic church, dominating the skyline with its twin towers and green dome. The most prominent features of the exterior are the elaborately decorated wooden and bronze doors and Roman tombstones built in the exterior walls. Notice the keystone with Christ near the entrance, which was preserved from the older church. The Gothic pieta and statues of significant bishops and saints stand in the niches of the facade. The interior features a painted dome and the altar of Corpus Christi surrounded by angels. Put Cathedral of St. Nicholas (Stolnica Sv. Nikolaja) on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Ljubljana trip planner.

  • Visited this magnificent cathedral of St. Nicholas in the Baroque style, located in the heart of Ljubljana. The building of the temple, which can be seen today, was built in the 18th century. The authentic church was burnt by the Turks in the 14th century. The interior of St. Nicholas Cathedral is especially distinguished by the frescoes of the Italian masters. Individual interior items were added already in the 20th century: the doors of the central entrance, where the scenes from the history of Slovenia and the side, with the image of bishops are imprinted. At the same time there was a baptismal font made by Johe Plejnik, and the chair of the bishop. All the interior decoration of the cathedral, sculptures made by masters of the Ljubljana School. The magnificent dome of the temple is decorated with frescoes by the artist Matey Languza, and the altar was made in 1774 by an unknown master. Entrance Fee: €2. Recommend.
