The impressive structure was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578. The interior boasts intricately carved walls, a painted vaulted ceiling, and a marble floor made up of Knight's tombs. The cathedral's chapels are filled with elaborate riches and dedicated to the different patron saints of the Knights. Don't miss Caravaggio's masterpiece, "The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist" (1608) in the Oratory, for which it was commissioned. Without a doubt the most important place to visit in Malta. Amazing art by the masters. A real piece if history more »

Amazing architecture and beautifully appointed. Filled with history, the handheld guide devices do a great job at explaining everything. A little expensive, but definitely worth a visit! more »

Do not let the exterior fool you, once inside the phrase “speechless” was the perfect description for how I felt. Having visited many churches and Cathedral’s throughout Europe and Great Britain, the beauty of the interior of St. John’s is difficult to describe, even with photos. If in Valletta, this is truly a must stop for any visitor to savor in the beauty from the middle 1500s forward. The Beheading of John the Baptist is a beautiful work of art. The Cathedral has experienced recent renovations and a make over, making the wonderful spot even better.

It's cool but not much to do, there was a cafe nearby called kantina cafe which was fantastic.
