Explore Japan’s largest cemetery, Koyasan Okunoin, situated on Mount Koya among tall, ancient cedar trees. Cross the first bridge to enter the cemetery, which houses over 200,000 tombstones, and enjoy a peaceful 2 km (1.2 mi) walk to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi’s eternal meditation. Wander between tombs of all shapes and sizes, some covered in moss and some more recent, including the final resting places of important lords and monks. You can also take a shorter path passing by a recent cemetery expansion and view a memorial to pests, which was erected by an exterminator company. Using our custom trip planner, Koya-cho attractions like Koyasan Okunoin can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Koyasan Okunoin reviews
The forest is very spiritual and historic feeling, perhaps one of the high points of visiting Mt Koya -san. For sure if it is a day trip.

This cemetery is the place where all the warlords and samurais was buried on the past. There is also emperors and kings, the surrounding forest is beautiful and peaceful Those are quiet times in japan, there are no tourist from overseas and this places are almost empty. I been 2 time at sunrise si the best time, we also been on the night and definitely is not you place if you are easy to get scared. Overall for me the best place in koyasan
Rightfully one of the most beautiful cemetery in the world. The drive is all worth it.
