St Mark's Campanile, Venice

4.6
Overlooking the city's famous lagoon, St Mark's Campanile is one of the Venice's most recognizable symbols. Originally constructed as a lighthouse, this 99 m (323 ft) tall bell tower stands alone in one corner of St. Mark's Square. The tower's simple form has a fluted brick shaft topped by a belfry housing five bells. A pyramidal spire with a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel caps the tower. Constructed in the ninth century on ancient Roman foundations, the bell tower underwent a massive reconstruction after a sudden collapse in 1902. Once the site of Galileo's observatory, the tower now features an elevator for easy access to the top and views of the lagoon and distant Alps. • This has always been my favourite place to get stunning views all over Venice. Currently it’s €8 per adult and to go to the top can be accessed via a lift. Great view of Piazza San Marco, Salute...  more »
  • From the top looks like a different city as you can't notice the canals. The red rooftops remind me of old towns, its worthy to visit it.  more »

  • Be careful of when the bells will go off (unfortunately I was standing right beside one when they decided to chime many times). It is just an awe inspiring place.Great view over entire Venice. Definitely must go here when you visit Venice. It is the highest possible point and you can take some awesome pictures. Also due to the height, there is a very chilling wind blowing.
  • You must get a look from every side to really see Venice. It is beautiful at sunset. Be careful of when the bells will go off (unfortunately I was standing right beside one when they decided to chime many times). Also due to the height, there is a very chilling wind blowing. This is very nice if you have been running arround the city in the hot sun all day.
