#21 of 524 in Historic Sites in Rome
Emperor Caracalla constructed Terme di Caracalla, the second-largest Roman baths in the city, between 211 and 217 CE. The original complex covered 25 hectares (33 acres), and the building was 228 m (750 ft) long with a 38.5 m (125 ft) high ceiling. The central area of the remaining baths is the summer location of the Rome Opera Company and a concert venue for world-famous acts, such as the Three Tenors. Buy a ticket to tour the ruins, and wander among the huge walls and crumbling foundations. • So cool!! Highly recommend spending the few extra Euros and getting some virtual tour goggles! It really helps you visualize what it looked like back when it was built.
  • We missed the Baths of Caracalla on our first trip in July (18) so decided to check the ruins out in January when we were there. The remnants of the second largest public baths in Rome are massive. They are quite an impressive display and very different from today. The overall size of this place when built was huge. Be prepared to walk a bit, but all on flat surfaces and with no crowds in the month of January. We liked this and would recommend it.
