Santa Pudenziana, Rome

#131 of 525 in Historic Sites in Rome
Santa Pudenziana is a church of Rome, a basilica built in the 4th-century, that is dedicated to Saint Pudentiana, sister of Saint Praxedes and daughter of Saint Pudens. It is a national church for Filipinos and therefore one of the national churches in Rome.

It has been suggested that there was no such person as Pudentiana, the name having originated as an adjective used to describe the house of Saint Pudens, the Domus Pudentiana. Saint Paul referred to Pudens in 2 Timothy, 4: 21.

  • Beautiful basilica near Santa Maria Maggiore. Famous for having housed Saint Peter during his time in Rome. Relics if the table upon which the first Pope celebrated Mass are contained in the high altar.
  • Extraordinary. Despite some less than perfect Baroque modifications, this is the closest you can come in Rome to seeing a Christian church from the Imperial era. The mosaic is stunning, and the original bones of the church are still visible. Highly recommended to either do in-depth research before visiting, or hire a knowledgeable guide. So much to unpack...
