Piazza del Popolo, Rome

#35 of 2,915 in Things to do in Rome
Piazza del Popolo has long served as meeting place for the people of Rome. Begin your tour of the large square with a look at the northern gate's inscription, which reads, "For a happy and blessed entrance." This message was left for Queen Christiana upon her arrival to the city following her conversion to Roman Catholicism. In the center, marvel at the ancient Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome in 10 BCE. Admire the square's almost identical churches and see if you can spot the differences between them. • Such a beautiful place to spend the Christmas afternoon! It is sunny and warm. Enough people to bring just the right amount of energy and excitement but not overly crowded. We are loving it!
  • Grand plaza with wide open space in the early morning then bustles with humanity in the evening especially in the Christmas season as adjacent shopping streets are packed with shoppers. 350 year old northern gate to the Old City of Rome is at the north side of the plaza. A plundered (by Romans), 3500 year old Egyptian obelisk sits impressively in the middle, and two similar churches at the southern end . Peoples Plaza.
