This museum houses a collection of some 3000 instruments dating from ancient times to 1800, including the first piano (1722) by Bartolomeo Cristofori and the famous 17th century Barberini enharmonic harp. Besides western music instruments, the collection contains a section devoted to instruments of ancient cultures (Egyptian, Greek, Roman) and numerous antique instruments from non-European countries (China, Japan, India, Persia, Africa, Oceania).
