Museo dell'Arte Classica Reviews
This free museum, part of La Sapienza, showcases copies of (mostly) ancient Greek and Roman statues and reliefs (from the world's great museums in Paris, London, Berlin, Athens, Rome, the Vatican... more »
One of the museums with the highest number of chalk statues you may find in Italy. Actually, it is a so called "gipsoteca" (chalk statues museum). Placed within the campus of the University Sapienza of Rome, the entrance is free and from the main door of the department. However, if you come here too late you will need to enter from another door, that is still within the department. In the hallways you will find tables for students. Indeed, this museum was originally thought for fine arts students: it represents a former 3D catalogue of important statues from all over the world, and it was born when 3D digitized copies of cultural heritage artifacts were not possible. In the middle of the museum, there is a circular lecture room with a piano: if you are lucky enough you may find someone playing the piano introducing the perfect music for this place. There are hundreds of statues inside, it took me 1 hour and half to be fully visited (I had a slow pace). You will also find some more recent inventions prototypes, like the Edison's Phonograph. A not well-known museum, which totally deserves a visit. Be sure to do not miss it!
Best museum in Rome. It takes gypsum to a whole new level. Larger and more spectacular collection than the Gipsformerei in Charlottenburg.
