See a 2,000-year-old altar and learn how it was found, discovered, and excavated at Museo dell'Ara Pacis. Constructed in 13 BCE in honor of Augustus’ return from the provinces of Spain and Gaul, this altar offers a look into past traditions. Walk inside the enclosure to the altar itself, examine the openings in the stonework designed to wash out the blood of the animals sacrificed each year on Augustus’ birthday. Four panels on the enclosure depict military victories and Roman family life. Watch a video providing information on the discovery and reconstruction of the altar, as well as the descriptions of the symbolic carvings on the enclosure. You can also choose to go downstairs to view the art exhibit. A small bookstore and audio guides are available. • A lovely modern building covers this reconstructed roman monument. €10 seems a high price for a single exhibit museum and other exhibitions cost extra. I enjoyed it very much.
  • the Ara Pacis museum hosts the great exhibition “Claudio Imperatore. Messalina, Agrippina and the shadows of a dynasty ". The story of Claudio's life and works, rendered through an original set-up made of images and visual and sound sugestions, is the salient feature of the exhibition itinerary.
