  • In the 14th ward (Borgo) in the shadow of the picturesque Castel Sant'Angelo and in front of its gardens there is this beautiful composition, which is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Siena, who is compatrona of Italy (along with St. Francis of Assisi) and of Europe. The marble work is from 1962 and was created by the artist Francesco da Messina, to commemorate the fifth centenary of the canonization of the saint and inaugurated on April 30, the day of his liturgical feast. The Work is built on a large marble base, where the following inscription is placed at the front: CATHARINA SENENSIS PATRIAE DECUS RELIGIONISQUE TUTAMEN The main element is the large statue of the Saint, whose very expressive face leaves breathless, stands and is represented with her dress and the Dominican nun's cloak and holding a branch of lilies (symbol of its purity). Four marble bas-reliefs complete the work, representing some highlights of the saint's life. The following inscriptions are placed in the order: - THE CATERINA SERVA AND SCHIAVA DE' SERVI OF GESV' CRISTO - THE SVA MOUTH DON'T KNOW IF NOT GESV' AND CATERINA - I SON DESSA TOLLI ME - And I'll TELL YOU VENITE SICVRAMENT On the whole a very beautiful and significant work, which must be admired in all its details. NOTE on Saint Catherine from Siena: His birth was on 25 March 1347 in Siena and his death on 29 April 1380 in Rome and canonized in 1461. His tomb is located under the main altar of the Church of the Minerva in Rome, near the Pantheon.
