  • In Via di Porta Castello, past the open furnics of the Passetto, going in the opposite direction to Via della Conciliation, you can see the Fountain of cannonball. It is located inside a small arch closed in travertine and consists of a mask placed in the center of a pyramid made of overlapping stone balls. From the mouth of the mask comes the cinnamon that pours water into the below drinking tub. It is one of the fountains that, in the fascist era, were commissioned to the Roman architect Pietro Lombardi with the obligation to make them tied, in the subject chosen to represent them, to the rional context, using references to the characteristic of the area or to the coats of arms. This is the fountain dedicated to the Borgo ward: the subject recalls with the pyramidal catasta of bullets the nearby fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo. A total of nine were made between 1926 and 1929.

  • A nice fountain, all in travertine, inspires joy to see that face surrounded by balls, sin the degradation that surrounds it, dirt and carelessness are the master now, everywhere throughout the city.
