The Fontana della Pigna or simply Pigna is a former Roman fountain which now decorates a vast niche in the wall of the Vatican facing the Cortile della Pigna, located in Vatican City, in Rome, Italy. To visit Fontana della Botticella and other attractions in Rome, use our Rome trip tool.
Composed of a large bronze pine cone almost four meters high which once spouted water from the top, the Pigna originally stood near the Pantheon next to the Temple of Isis. It was moved to the courtyard of the Old St. Peter's Basilica during the Middle Ages and then moved again, in 1608, to its present location.
The courtyard where it stands was originally part of the Cortile del Belvedere, designed by Donato Bramante to connect the palace of Pope Innocent VIII with the Sistine Chapel. When Bramante died, architect Pirro Ligorio finished the project and added the wall and niche to close the courtyard. Construction of the Vatican Library divided the Cortile del Belvedere into two areas. The upper part of the courtyard, the Cortile della Pigna, takes its name from the fountain.
The bronze peacocks on either side of the fountain are copies of those decorating the tomb of the Emperor Hadrian, now the Castel Sant'Angelo. The original peacocks are in the Braccio Nuovo Museum.

Charming small almost unnoticable fountain
The fountain is located in a niche carved from a pillar placed between two arches that unite the churches of San Rocco and San Girolamo degli Schiavoni, and was made in 1774, as is indicated in the inscription placed above it, probably with the contribution of Brotherhood of hosts and Barcaroli. Before it was located in the vicinity of the mausoleum of Augustus and for the work related to its isolation and the creation of Piazza Augusto Imperatore, was disassembled and reassembled where we can now admire. The rectangular niche is surrounded by white marble, the fountain presents, inside a shell, the head of a boy, with the cap of a porter, from whose mouth comes out the water that spills over a small semicircular basin, placed at the top of Rocks This water, in turn, through two Cannelle placed at the base of the basin, emerges on a rectangular basin supported by a barrel. Note Always at Largo San Rocco, a few meters from the fountain, there is another element worth seeing is a hydrometer, which as indicated in the inscription was inserted in 1821. It served to measure the flood level of the Tiber, and observing it better, you notice the inscriptions that indicate the height reached by them in the SIXTEENTH century: they are incredibly high.
